 The Centre for Alternative Technology offers a variety of short residential courses covering a range of sustainability issues. Courses on renewable energy, environmentally friendly building techniques, and water and sanitation solutions can help you learn more about sustainable ways of living, and allow you to put your ideas into practice.
We also offer introductory classes in ecology, woodland management, organic gardening and wilderness skills, as well as specialist courses aimed at educators and trade professionals.
By providing inspiration, information and skills, short courses at the Centre for Alternative Technology help enable you to live and work in a more sustainable way.

Course Tutors
The Centre is in a unique position to offer courses. Our staff have many years of 'hands-on' experience, backed up by academic expertise in their subjects. Our renewable energy hardware, organic gardens, ecological buildings and sewage systems are ideal for practical sessions, and the holistic approach of the Centre enables topics to be examined in a broad, sustainable environmental context.
Everyone was incredibly impressed by the high teaching quality and depth of knowledge.
Accommodation
 Our on-site accommodation is situated in a Segal-style timber-frame self-build house and above the Centre's wholefood vegetarian restaurant. Standard accommodation is in small hostel-type rooms with two to five beds in each room. Single rooms are also available for a supplementary fee. We provide bedding, hot water, showers and toilets, and some rooms have washbasins. There are also common rooms for relaxation, with facilities for making hot drinks.
Electricity is from renewable sources and both buildings have solar water heaters, which provide approximately half the hot water needs annually, as well as the wastewater. Sewage is recycled in our reed bed system.
It was excellent to spend time at CAT outside of opening hours. Very inspirational!
Guests
 If your family or friends would like to join you to spend a few days enjoying all that CAT and the surrounding area have to offer, it is sometimes possible to accommodate guests.

Food
All meals are served in CAT's wholefood vegetarian restaurant, which serves up delicious dishes made with local, organic and Fair Trade produce (where possible) - some of which is grown in the Centre's very own organic gardens.
Unless otherwise stated, course fees include all meals served during your stay at CAT.
We are happy to cater for special diets - please let us know your needs when booking.
The food was of an excellent quality, quantity and variety - loved it!
Bespoke Study Options
 We can offer a wide range of tuition in theoretical and practical sessions and can develop a programme to suit the needs of the individual group. Please make enquiries for bespoke study option prices on joan.randle@cat.org.uk.
CAT Courses accommodation is available throughout the year for groups of ten or more people who do not wish to self-cater.
Prices per person per day are:
- Bed and breakfast: £35
- Bed, breakfast, evening meal: £45
- Full board: £50
Admission to CAT and bedding are included.
Rooms are available from 14.00 hours on the day of arrival to 09.30 hours on the day of departure.

We also have two Eco Cabins, just off our main site, in a beautiful location overlooking the Dulas Valley.
The general consensus was that whilst most people had been on many other courses, the one here at CAT was more memorable than any other.
