Courses Available from the Graduate School of the Environment

All courses at the Graduate School of the Environment (GSE) examine environmental issues, energy and buildings. To help meet varying interests and career aspirations GSE offer three unique angles of approach.

The Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies MSc covers building design, energy and wider environmental issues. It is intended to be accessible for all those with an interest in contemporary environmental issues. This course has two methods of access; it can be undertaken by attendance at CAT (with the opportunity of individual modules undertaken via distance learning) or by the wholly Distance Learning Route
Our Renewable Energy in the Built Environment MSc focuses particularly on the technical and engineering side of renewable energy technology.
While the Part 2 Professional Diploma in Architecture considers energy and the environment in the context of architectural design.
There are now possibilities for a PhD through the Doctor of Ecological Building Practices programme.

All programmes offer the opportunity to work in a sector of increasing importance with high demand for skilled individuals.
The Graduate school is a recognised RIBA CPD provider and its courses are accredited by the Energy Institute; the Msc’s are degrees of the University of East London.
The post graduate courses allow participants to gain advanced knowledge of the sector as part of their career development or to facilitate a career change.
All courses benefit from a diverse and experienced student community.

MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies (AEES)

MSc Renewable Energy in the Built Environment (REBE)

This programme examines the theory and practice of renewable energy technologies in depth, with special reference to the built environment. Further course details

Professional Diploma in Architecture with Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies

The Centre for Alternative Technology and the University of East London's joint programme entitled Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies has been prescribed by the Architects Registration Board (ARB), subject to periodic review, for the purposes of entry onto the United Kingdom Register of Architects. The prescription of this qualification will be due for renewal by September 2010 as part of the initial two yearly review-cycle.

Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and Module Packages

We also offer individual modules or module packages which could be ideal for improving knowledge and skills in specific areas covered by the above courses. The Graduate School is an accredited RIBA CPD provider. Further course details

Doctor of Ecological Building Practices (D.EBP)

This doctoral research degree offers the opportunity to explore and develop practice in relation to environmental issues and is open to those working in the built environment professions of architecture, building and construction, planning, development, engineering, product, industrial and manufacturing design, and others whose work can or could relate specifically to an ecological or sustainable built environment. CAT Short Courses

In addition to our postgraduate courses, the Centre for Alternative Technology offers a variety of short residential courses covering a range of sustainability issues. Courses on renewable energy, environmentally friendly building techniques, and water and sanitation solutions can help you learn more about sustainable ways of living, and allow you to put your ideas into practice.
