About Us
The Graduate School of the Environment (GSE) offers a range of inspirational post-graduate programmes. A unique combination of leading professionals, academics and authors create innovative solutions at Europe’s leading Environmental centre.

As well as providing information and interactive displays to the public, CAT has been host to courses and consultancy for universities, business, local government and NGOs for over 30 years.  The new Wales Institute for Sustainable Education (WISE) will strengthen this position and allow even more good work to continue.

History of GSE

Students at the Graduate SchoolConceived by Mike Thompson (course leader), the MSc Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies has been running in collaboration with the University of East London since 1994.  Originally based at UEL’s London campus, in 2000 the course moved to CAT giving students the opportunity to learn in beautiful, inspiring and innovative surroundings. It has grown rapidly since then, and in 2007 the Graduate School of the Environment formed.  It now offers several high standard programmes at post-graduate level.

Staff

The Centre of Alternative Technology’s staff (both past and present) provide many years of experience across all the fields covered by the course.  Lecturers and tutors include Peter Harper (philosophy), Damian Randle (energy), Rob Gwillim (renewable technologies and engineering), Judith Thornton (water and waste), Cindy Harris and Tom Woolley (environmental building and architecture).

In addition to this valuable wealth of experience, UEL and external staff supply extensive academic and vocational knowledge from their ongoing professional involvement in the fields of architecture, engineering, sustainability and consultancy.

The staffing ratio is extremely generous, and we take great pride in our caring, effective personal student support.
